With support from a partnership of private and public sector organizations and a growing list of commercial television stations and cable systems across Pennsylvania, the SPORTSfever Television Network has evolved into the largest statewide sports television network in Pennsylvania. By teaming up with local commercial television stations in each of the six DMAs in Pennsylvania, STN is available to nine out of 10 Pennsylvania households which subscribe to cable or satellite (Dish Network and Direct TV) or simply use an antenna.
Nielsen Media Research estimates that there are 5.8 million Pennsylvania TV households--70% (4.06 million) cable, 20% (1.16 million) satellite, 10% (580,000) over-the-air. SPORTSfever Television Network affiliates reach all 67 counties and 92% (estimated 5,320,819) of all cable, satellite & over-the-air TV households in PA—a total of 13.1 million viewers in Pennsylvania and adjacent regions of Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York and New Jersey.
In contrast, FSN Pittsburgh (cable and satellite) is not available in most parts of south central and all of southeastern Pennsylvania. CN8 and Comcast Sports Net (Comcast cable systems only) are not available in most of western and northwestern Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Cable Network’s distribution of high school sports telecasts produced by its cable system affiliates and its own production of the PIAA state championship finals is available only on cable (no satellite or over-the-air) and reaches just 62 percent of Pennsylvania’s 5.8 million television households. STN programming has aired on television stations WHP, WLYH, WHBG, WGCB, WTVE, WQMY, WJAC, WBGN, WFMZ and WGAL and on cable networks FSN and CN8 and on cable systems Comcast, Service Electric, Time Warner, RCN, Blue Ridge, Atlantic Broadband and Nittany Media. WSEE in Erie, WPMY in Pittsburgh and WHVL in State College have signed on for 2007.
STN telecasts have a proven track record of attracting viewers. Not all SPORTSfever Television Network telecasts have viewership measured. When measured, high school football telecasts have produced thousands of viewers reflected by ratings generated through written viewer surveys conducted by Nielsen in November 2003 in Central Pennsylvania. Inaugural Pennsylvania Kickoff Classic (September 4, 2004) viewership generated ratings as high as 1.75, according to FSN. Pennsylvania Kickoff Classic II on August 27, 2005 generated a 54 percent increase in ratings over the 2004 Kickoff Classic. Kickoff Classic II ratings climbed as high as 2.7 (31,700 households), easily surpassing in the same time slot ratings of telecasts of major league baseball on Fox, PGA tournament on CBS and a national high school football game on ESPN.
STN productions, which are commercial presentations, meet commercial television network industry standards for sports television. STN utlitizes Pennsylvania-based professional television production contractors who supply network production equipment, services and staffing.
