District 3 basketball Wrap

Tournament attendance and scoring stats

Attendance
The paid attendance for the eight PIAA District 3 championship basketball games was 11,888, down from the 12,434 in 2007.

Ironically, further evidence that televising the games does not impact the paid attendance negatively, all eight games were televised live in 2007. None of the games in 2008 were televised live.

The Reading-Central Dauphin East, Trinity-Delone Catholic, Reading Central Catholic-Scotland and Wilson-Central Dauphin East girls games were televised by SPORTSfever Television Network on tape delay at least one day later.

For the seven sessions February 15 through February 23 in Giant Center and the one session (tripleheader) on Monday February 25, the total attendance for the 24 games was 28,454.

Top scoring performances
When it came to scoring points, Greencastle-Antrim senior forward Dameatric Scott stole the show with his 39 points in the Susquehanna Township-G-A AAA semifinal four overtime classic. For the tournament, he scored 106 points for a 26.5 points per game average. The 39 points is a Giant Center record. There have been 168 high school games played at Giant Center since February 2003.

Another senior, Jillian Keefer of Palmyra, scored 99 points in four games, an average of 24.8 points per game.

Lancaster Country Day was eliminated after its second game but senior Alex Swanson scored 66 points, an average of 33 points per game.

But it was underclassmen who made a major impact on District 3 basketball.

Northeastern’s Lau sisters are 5-11 juniors and they can flat out play the game. Not only can they shoot, they can create their shots from the perimeter, slashing to the basket, off the dribble, and inside. Autumn scored a tournament-best 127 points for an average of 31.75 points per game. She had three games over 30 points. Amber scored 83 points for a 20.8 points per game average.

Eastern has a pair of freshman who emerged in the tournament. Andrew Nicholas is 6-foot-6 and Austin Tillotson is 6-0. Nicholas scored 78 points for a 19.5 ppg and Tillotson scored 81 points for a 20.3 ppg.

York Catholic has freshman guard Kady Schrann who averaged 20.8 ppg (83 points). Trinity sophomore forward Eric Kindler scored 82 points in four games for an average of 20.5 ppg.
